This bivalve has a solid shell formed by two equal valves joined by a visible ligament in both, which allows it to open and close. Its external surface is sculpted by deep radial and concentric lines or ribs, which give it a much more marked grid-like appearance than in the fine clam. The external coloration of the shell is normally dark, between brown and gray-black, depending on the substrate where it lives, and the internal is brown, purple or yellow. It has two long siphons joined for most of their length, this being a good difference from the fine clam.
It lives in sand and gravel bottoms from the intertidal zone down to a few meters deep, sharing a habitat with the fine clam. It is fast growing, reaching the minimum commercial size of 40 mm at approximately 2 years.
